Generals Pour On the Offence During Home and Home

Generals Pour On the Offence During Home and Home

Evan McFeeters

The Cochrane Generals and Mountainview Colts squared off in a home and home series during the final weekend of the 2010/11 regular season. Coincidentally these two teams are set to face eachother in the first round of the playoffs. With game 1 of the series scheduled for Wednesday night, there was much more then just two points on the line when the pucked dropped. Cochrane hosted Mountainview on Friday night to kick off the weekend. Both teams were looking to send a message and the hits were hard and plentiful. But to win a hockey game you have to score goals as well and the Gens filled the Colts net all night long. Cochrane started quick and buried 3 goals in the first period, including 2 by Jonny Pictin. Tempers boiled over early in the second period when the Colts' captain charged from the neutral zone and hit a Generals defencemen behind the goal line very high and VERY late. A couple of fights ensued afterwards including Spencer Sobie easily dismantaling his opponet to send a message to the Colts that, those kind of dirty plays will not be accepted. After the dust settled the Gens countinued their offensive unslaught by adding 3 more second period goals. The goals kept coming in the 3rd period as Cochrane found the back of the net 4 more times to increase to score to 10-2. Pictin put home 2 in the 3rd to give him 4 on the night but that effort was only good eough for the game's 2nd star. Captain Danny McSween put forth one of the most dominating performances in a Generals sweater as he led the way with an incredible 8 points for much deserved 1st star honors.

The next night the teams travelled to Didsbury to complete the home and home. Many people expected some fireworks in this game but it turned out to be a relatively quiet game. The Generals offensive guns countiued to roll as they put up 9 more goals in this game, including a record settting goal by McSween to give him his 100th point of the year. The final score in the game was 9-4 and first star went to Gideon Neufeld who played a very solid game on the blue line and dishing a hard check on the Colts captain who had his head down in the trolley tracks.

The weekend set the stage for what should be an physical playoff series starting Wednesday in Cochrane at 730pm.
