Generals Win Another at Home

Generals Win Another at Home

Evan McFeeters

The Generals welcomed the Three Hills Thrashers into town for their final meeting of the season. The season series has been close all year and this game was no different. Cochrane opened the scoring at 6:08 of the 1st period when Jesse Adshead forced a turnover behind the Thrasher's net and moved the puck to Riley Boothby. Boothby drove the net and fired a shot through the Three Hills goalie. However the Thrashers stormed back with 2 goals of their own to take the lead. With 1:25 remaining in the period Maddison Smiley flipped the puck up to Jason Labelle, Labelle then feathered a pass to Mike Matlo who swatted the puck to the back of the net to tie the score.

Three Hills fought back and took the lead again early in the 2nd period. Looking to regain momentum the Generals sent out the line of Adshead, Boothby, and KyleTucker. The three teamed up to hem the Thashers in their own end for 2 full minutes with their relentless forecheck and eventually drawing a penalty. Smiley, Labelle and Matlo hooked up once again on th PP for Matlo's 2nd of the night. Six minutes later it was deja vu all over again with the Adshead line forechecking and drawing another penalty. During the powerplay Labelle set up yet another Matlo goal for the hat trick and more importantly the lead going into the 3rd period.

The 3rd was exciting, faced paced with two very valuable points on the line. Three Hills managed to tie the score just after the Generals killed off a four minute penalty. With the game looking to be headed into overtime the Thrashers were awarded two more powerplays and a huge oppurtunity to get the go-ahead goal but the PKers and goalie Garrett Fraser stood the test and kept the game tied. With just under 2 minutes left the Generals applied the pressure looking to win the game in regualtion. With the leagues top two goal scorers on the ice it was a dangerous situation for the Thrashers. Danny McSween moved the puck over to rookie of the year candidate Kris Keller who put the puck on Jonny Pictin's stick. Pictin walked into the slot and fired home the game winning goal that sent to the crowd into a frenzy. The Gens hit the road next weekend to play the Banff Bears. With a win in Banff they will lock up top spot in the Central Division. Next home game is Feb 18th vs Mountainview Colts.
