Gens Have Up And Down Weekend

Gens Have Up And Down Weekend

Evan McFeeters

It was a mix of good and bad for the Generals this past weekend. The team travelled up to Three Hills to face the Thrashers in a 4 point divisional game. Things started great for the Gens as Danny McSween continues to rip up the league. McSween scored two pretty goals in the opening 5 minutes with linemates Jonny Pictin and Darren Schmautz picking up assists. Then Jason Labelle added a strange one in the last minute of the period, firing a blind back hand pass that squeeked past the sleeping goalie. The team was in good spirits heading into the dressing room. The same could not be said after the 2nd. The Generals came out and showed no focus or determination. They went through the motions and found themselves tied 4-4. The coaching staff tried to regroup during the intermission but the lackluster effort continued into the 3rd. Cochrane went on to drop their 2nd game in a row by a 6-4 score. If it wasnt for the stellar goaltending of Kenny Quinn the score would have been lopsided.

The Generals returned home on Saturday and decided enough was enough and got back on track with a 10-3 win over the High River Flyers. The team held a meeting before the game to address some issues and they responded by putting together a solid effort. Cochrane played by far their most physical game of the season and hit everything in site. The phyiscal play led to the Generals dominating on the scoreboard. Jonny Pictin led the charge with a hat trick and 1 assist, McSween, Kris Keller, and Jay Matlo also had 3 point nights. Honourable mention goes to Spencer Sobie and newcomer Alex Colborne for picking up their 1st goals of the season. Garrett Fraser picked up another win between the pipes.

The Generals host the Red Deer Vipers, Friday night at 730pm. Both teams are tied atop the HJHL standings with 45 points. Come on out and cheer on your Generals as the 2 top teams in the league battle it out.
