Another late one gives The Generals the edge!

Another late one gives The Generals the edge!

The Generals were on the road Saturday night to take on the Stettler Lightning. The Generals were the first to get on the board when Riley Boothby sent Kris Keller on a breakaway and Keller made no mistake burying his 2ndof the season.  Less than a minute later the Lightning answered right back to even the score at 1-1. Then at the midway point of the first period the Lighting netted another to go ahead 2-1. Despite outshooting the Lightning 16-10 in the period, the Generals trailed 2-1 as the teams went to the rooms after 20 minutes.

At the 4 minute mark of the second, Reid Wilson continued his hot streak as he potted his 6thof the year to pull the game even. The Lightning again answered the Generals push with a goal of their own to re-establish their 1 goal lead. The resilient Generals weren’t about to roll over, however. In the dying minutes of the second, the Generals steady line of Boothby, Soloski, and Keller struck again. This time is was Boothby shovelling home his 6thof the year with line mates Soloski and Keller picking up the helpers. The game was now tied 3-3 after 40 minutes of play. The Generals outshot the Lightning 12-7 in the period.

The offence would open up in the third with the Generals starting the show with 2 quick goals. The first was a Jayman Matlo “laser” that was redirected in by Tyson Soloski, the second was Wilson toe dragging his way around a sprawling defenseman and sliding his 7thof the year five-hole. The Generals now led 5-3, but the Lightning weren’t mailing this one in, especially in front of their home crowd. Two quick goals only 120 seconds apart dissolved the Generals’ lead. With overtime looming, Jonny Pictin, late in a shift picked up a loose puck along the wall and skated in on a partial break. The goalie seemed to recognize the shooter and completely took away Pictin’s “bread and butter” top right corner. Pictin saw this and slid the puck five-hole to give the Generals the lead with only 1:20 remaining in the game. The Generals defended their lead for the final 80 seconds and the buzzer rang improving the Generals record to a perfect 6-0. Shots in the third were 12 for the Gens and 11 for the Lightning.

The Generals outshot the Lightning in the game 40 to 28. Gabe McLeod picked up his 2nd win of the season between the pipes. The PP went 0/7 on the night while the PK went 2/3.
