Generals Offense Poisons The Vipers

Generals Offense Poisons The Vipers

Evan McFeeters

The Generals traveled north on the QE2 up to Red Deer looking to continue their momentum from the previous night. Cochrane played a solid opening period on the road. Both goalies shut the door and the 1st ended scoreless. The 2nd was a different story as the teams exploded for 5 goals in 5 minutes with the Generals opening the flood gates and gaining a 4-1 lead. Taylor Irvin got the ball rolling on a great individual effort. A minute later Jonny Pictin fired home a rebound in the slot. Pictin then extended the lead when he went coast to coast and sniped a laser in tight, top-self, short-side. The Vipers cut the lead to 2 immediately after Pictin's beauty but the Gens responded 18 seconds later when Irvin found the back of the net for his 2nd of the game. Cochrane drew a powerplay midway through the period and Darren Schmautz one-timed a shot that beat the Red Deer 'keeper. After 2 periods the score was 5-1. The Generals kept it coming in the 3rd period when Pictin capped off a great night by potting his hat trick goal on the powerplay. Geoff Brechmann added insult to injury later in the period to push the score to 7-1. Tyler Fyten was outstanding all game long between the pipes stopping 38 of 39 shots and being named 1st star. The Generals still hope for home ice advantage in the first round of playoffs. With a Three Hills loss on Sunday and a Generals win Monday night in High River, the Generals can clinch home ice.
