The Cochrane Generals faced off on Friday night against the Strathmore Wheatland Kings. The Generals looked to start another winning streak against a Strathmore team that looked to play the part of spoiler after being eliminated from playoff contention last weekend.
The Generals came out flying the first shift and their hard work in practice that week payed off early when Danny McSween fired a shot from the slot past the Strathmore goalie and into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead within the first minute. The goal was assisted by Sean Erwin and Darren Schmautz. The Generals continued to pressure the Kings and at 10:13 of the period Jordan Davidson wristed his first of the night past the goalie to give the Gens a 2-0 lead, the goal was assisted by Taylor Melnyk. Both teams continued to fire shots at the net and both goalies made some big saves and it appeared that the Generals would go into the intermission with a two goal lead, but two quick goals by Darren Schmautz and Mike Matlo gave the Generals a 4-0 lead after 20 minutes. The shots where 18-9 in favour of the Generals.
After a strong first period the Generals looked to come out and hold the momentum when only one minute in Jordan Davidson scored his second of the night to give the Generals a 5-0 lead with the assists going to Kyle Tucker and Nick Borody. The Generals seemed to have all the momentum now but only two minutes later the Kings stole it back when a wrap around slid under the pads of goalie Tyler Fyten to cut there deficate to four. The goal seemed to energize the Kings adding two more goals to make the score 5-3. The Kings seemed to have the momentum until have way through the period when the Generals capitalized on there only powerplay chance of the game when Danny McSween fired his second of the night into the net to head into the break with a 6-3 score the assists went to Darren Schmautz and Gideon Neufeld. The Generals outshot the Kings 18-11 in the period and 36-20 in total through two periods.
Both goaltenders seemed to settle down after the intermission stopping all shots that came there way for the first 15 minutes, but late in the period the Generals exploded for four goals in 1:55. The first scored by Darren Schmautz his second of the night assisted by Taylor Melnyk and Jonny Pictin.
