Gens gain ground on Division Rivals

Gens gain ground on Division Rivals

Evan McFeeters

After a good week at practice the Generals hopped on the bus Friday night to take on the Three Hills Thrashers in the biggest game of the season. The Generals came into this game trailing Three Hills by 7 points in the Central Division and having 2 games in hand. The team knew this was a critical game if they wanted home ice advantage in the playoffs. The Thrashers opened the scoring 15 minutes into the period but their lead was short lived as Taylor Irvin tied the game only 1:16 later. With momentuem on Cochrane's side, Danny McSween finished a pretty passing play to give Cochrane the lead 2-1 heading into the 1st intermission.

The Generals came out of the gate quick in the second and McSween scored his 2nd of the game only 37 seconds after the puck was dropped. Then the flood gates started to open when starting goalie Tyler Fyten fired beautiful stretch pass to Irvin on the powerplay. Irvin walked in all alone and made no mistake snapping a shot bar-down. 2 minutes later Mike Matlo decided to get in on the act and hammered home his 1st of the game extending the visiting team's lead to 5-1 after 2 periods.

Early in the third the Thrashers cut the lead to 3 goals on the powerplay and then buried another 5 minutes later to make the score 5-3, but thats as close as they would get. Matlo scored again less then a minute after Three Hills 3rd marker. Jonny Pictin then added some more insurance mid way through the period and the Gens skated to a huge 7-4 victory. The W extened the Generals win streak to 7 games. They now have 1st place in the division within their sights as the season starts to wind down. The Gens were successful as they stuck to their game plan and Fyten was rock solid all game long between the pipes earning him 1st star honours.
