The Generals rallied for a last second win in Coaldale Sunday to bring their win streak to four games and kick off the post Christmas schedule on a high note. Down by a goal with three minutes left it wasn’t looking promising but a huge penalty kill gave the squad a chance. With 32 seconds left forward Mike Matlo capped of a 1st star effort with his hat trick goal to tie the game. Then with just 8 ticks left on the scoreboard Jay Labelle scored on a shot from the high slot that somehow slipped by the Copperheads tender. It was a see saw battle with Cochrane giving up multiple leads to Coaldale during the afternoon but somehow the injury and suspension depleted lineup was able to find a way to get an important 2 points.
Coaldale took a 2-0 lead in the first before a couple of power play goals only 27 seconds apart tied it up for the Gens. Mike Matlo and Danny Mcsween scored with assists from Taylor Irvin, Jason Labelle, Kashtin Gordon and Darren Schmautz. Each squad scored 3 in the second period to keep things knotted at five. Joel Grant scored the team’s 3rd consecutive pp goal with assists from Mcsween and Sean Erwin. Matlo was next on the pp train with his second of the night with Gordon getting the assist. The 3rd period was a back and forth battle with both goaltenders making timely saves, none better than the pad save made by Garret Fraser while the Gens were on the power play, to keep his team in the game. Coaldale managed to get the upper hand midway through the period but Cochrane was able to fight back for the win late in the game. The final score was 7-6 with Fraser making 36 saves in an emotional game for Coaldale as they showed a lot of class by donating the game proceeds to a local youth battling with cancer.
The Generals return to home ice looking to avenge and embarrassing loss to the Rimbey Rock earlier in the year. Game time is next Saturday at 7:30 pm.
