Generals Tame The Bears

Generals Tame The Bears

Bruce Corrigal

Coming off a big, hard earned win Friday night against the first place Okotoks Bison's, the Generals were looking to continue the winning streak Saturday night against the Banff Academy Bears. It didn't take long before the Generals opened the flood gates. Just 42 seconds into the opening period number 19 Kyle Tucker received a breakaway pass from Gideon Neufeld where Tucker pulled a crafty move on Banff's netminder Cacy Wilfer to pocket his first of the night. With most of the scoring chances coming from the Generals this made it tough on the Banff defense. Only four minutes after the opening tally Kyle Tucker posted his second of the night giving the Generals a bit of insurance. The Generals added to their lead with three more equal strength goals from Geoffroy Brechmann, Joel Grant and Jonny Pictin. Danny McSween would pick up the assist on Pictin's goal giving him his team leading 36th point. The Gens finished up the period with a commanding 5 - 0 lead.

The second period saw the Banff Bears make a goaltending change putting Richard Speilmann in the line of fire. This would turn out good for the Bears as it made for a much closer period. The Generals defense were finally called on as the Bears diced up a few scoring opportunities. This didn't phase rookie netminder Garrett Fraser as he turned aside all 9 shots in the second frame. Blaine Amiotte would also add to the Generals lead early in the period picking up his 3rd goal on the season and his 7th point.  Not too bad for his second game playing defence.

Coach Dana Boothby didn't have much to say between periods except for" keep up the hard work", so the Generals did just that. Although Banff opened the frame with the first goal just 32 seconds in, spoiling the shutout for Garrett Fraser, the Generals wouldn't be rattled as they quickly regained the pressure in the offensive zone. 3 minutes after Banff's goal the Generals capitalized on one of their few power plays. Kyle Tucker would finish off his hat trick scoring his third of the night with a generous pass from Jordan Davidson. As the period wore on tempers would flare as Gideon Neufeld found himself in a bit of a tilt with Banff's Taylor Preston, Gideon would make it an exciting scrap scoring the take down and the decision. The Generals would add two more goals to top off the night, Darren Schmautz would add his first of the night. Johnny Pictin would put together his second geno of the night and his third point of the evening. The Gens finished the game with a huge 9-1 win which would give them a much deserved two points.

The Generals went into the weekend with the goal of capturing all six points. After two great high intensity games The Gens are within the grasp of reaching this lofty goal.
