The Gens have been stuck in fifth gear the last few weeks—and fans are loving life in the fast lane.
On Dec. 5, ahead of the all-star break, the Gens continued to find their rhythm, notching their fifth straight win and collecting 11 points in their last six games.
Their 6-1 victory over the Strathmore Wheatland Kings gives them an edge in the season series and pulls them within two points of the Kings, with a game in hand.
Catching fire early, the Gens grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first period thanks to goals from Alex Devnich, Brendan Thubron, and Evan Malcolm, who notched his 10th of the season.
Leading scorer Diago Coelho struck just 44 seconds after Cole Twelt’s lone goal for the Kings, keeping the lead firmly at three by the end of the second.
Powerplay markers by Tyler Auger and Evan Judge in the third capped off the scoring. Judge had a three-point night, assisting on two first-period goals to spark the offense.
The South Division race is tightening, with the Gens firing on all cylinders after a slump in late October and early November. Only six points separate the top five teams. The Medicine Hat Cubs and Coaldale Copperheads battle back and forth for first place, while at the other end, the High River Flyers are still struggling to take off, stuck circling the basement.
On the biggest ringette weekend of the season in Cochrane arenas, the Gens hit High River Friday night before heading to Coaldale on Saturday.
They’ll return home for a pair of games on Dec. 19 and 21 against the Okotoks Bisons and Ponoka Stampeders before the Christmas break.
