The Cochrane Generals are one win away from punching their ticket to the south finals after a heart-stopping 4-3 overtime victory over the Wheatland Kings.

The Generals took Game 3 of the HJHL south division semifinal in dramatic fashion, as Nathan Sherriffs buried the winner at 8:39 of overtime, stunning the Kings and sending the Gens bench into celebration.

The win gives Cochrane a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series, with a chance to close it out Friday night at 7:45 in Totem One.

Cochrane came out flying, building a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals from Diago Coelho and Kael Kozicki. Evan Dean of the Kings answered 12:29 into the second to cut the lead in half, but Coelho struck again on the power play for his second of the night to restore the two-goal cushion.

Wheatland refused to go quietly. Evan Dean scored his second of the night at 16:58 of the second to keep the Kings within reach. In the third, Trip Jensen buried the equalizer on a powerplay at 5:27, setting the stage for a tense overtime showdown.

Overtime was fast, tight and physical, with both teams trading chances before Sherriffs found the opening in a scramble in front of Kings goalie Connor White.

Veteran netminder Isaias Maddigan made his third straight start for the Generals, backstopping Cochrane as they move within one win of advancing.

The matchup between these two teams has been intense all season, with the Kings securing second place on the final weekend of the regular schedule. Now, their playoff lives are on the line.
