The Cochrane Generals were armed and dangerous this afternoon, rolling to a dominant 7-1 victory over the Strathmore Wheatland Kings in the HJHL South Division semifinals.

In front of nearly 400 fans at home, Cochrane drew first blood when Alexander Devnich opened the scoring in the first period. But it was the second period that proved decisive.

Lincoln Pidsadowski, making his first start of the playoffs, scored two goals, including the game-winner early in the second, sparking a five-goal outburst that blew the game wide open. The third period saw Cole Whelan add an insurance marker, putting a commanding finish on the scoreline.

The win sent a clear message: although the Kings claimed a 5-4 victory in Game 1 on home ice, the series is far from settled.

Head coach Derek Bell reflected on the difference the home crowd has made in the first two games of the series.

“The culture was great going in, which it always is. I mean, we’ve got such a good room and a good coaching staff and preparation. But when you’re in somebody else’s bar and there’s just that much more… it’s almost like the 12th man in Seattle,” he said about the series opener the night before in Strathmore.

“When you got the fan support like we did tonight, you can sure feel the energy difference.”

Pidsadowski said the Generals were determined to have a big win in front of hometown fans.

“We came out today to play a statement game, coming out hard, and playing 60 minutes of Generals hockey.”

He said the team was fueled by the crowd.

“When we score and we look into the stands and see a couple hundred people cheering, shaking the glass, just getting ready for… you know the next goal to come… it’s unbelievable, it’s like nothing I’ve ever had before.”

Cochrane’s scoring depth was evident, with multiple lines contributing, as they have all season long, Bell said.

“If one isn’t going, three and four are going. If 2 is not going, then the one and three are going. It’s a great contributing. Everybody’s got a responsibility to do and everybody’s contributing at the best time.”

Other Generals marksmen included Evan Malcolm, who scored twice, and Ty Barry.

Strathmore coach Connor Boyd acknowledged the quick turnaround between games played a role.

“It’s a tight turnaround. We just didn’t have the legs today,” he said.

Looking ahead to the next game in Strathmore, Boyd said he wants to see his team bring more energy and execution.

“Higher energy, higher execution. Play Kings hockey and we’ll be happy with the outcome,” he said, praising his squad’s resilience this season.

The series now shifts back to Strathmore on Wednesday, before returning to Cochrane for Friday’s game, setting up a best-of-five showdown that promises more fireworks.

Elsewhere in the South, the Medicine Hat Cubs responded with a 4-3 win in Okotoks to tie their series with the Bisons. In the North, the Sylvan Lake Wranglers and Mountainview Colts are even at one game apiece, while regular-season champions Red Deer Vipers won 5-3 against the Airdrie Thunder.
