The Cochrane Generals are gearing up for a special weekend on the ice, highlighted by their Pink in the Rink Game on Saturday, Nov. 29 at 4:15 p.m. against the High River Flyers.

Fans can expect more than just fast-paced junior hockey: the team will be honoring those affected by cancer, with special jerseys, community donations, and a ceremonial puck drop by the parents of Elliot VanWynsberghe, a 10-year-old superfan who lost his battle with cancer in April.

“It’s a special game that touches all of our hearts,” said Gens head coach Derek Bell. “It’s for the guys, for the fans, and for those loved ones we’ve lost.”

Bell shared his own deeply personal reason for supporting the cause.

“Cancer has affected so many of us, and for me personally, I lost my best friend to this awful disease when in my second year of my 19-year coaching career in junior B hockey. He’s with me every day, and I never stop thinking about him when I go on the ice. This game is for him, and for everyone else battling or remembering those taken too soon.”

The Gens come into the weekend on a high note after what many are calling their strongest performance of the season.

Last Sunday against the Airdrie Thunder, the team played an exceptional 60 minutes, clicking on every line and showcasing both speed and skill.

“I think that was the best 60 minutes we’ve played this season,” Bell said. “It was fast, solid hockey from top to bottom, and the fans were treated to a great show.”

Off the ice, the Cochrane Pub Night earlier this month was a resounding success, drawing over 200 fans and featuring a lively player auction in addition to a live and silent auction to help raise funds for the club.

“It was an awesome evening,” Bell said. “The turnout, the energy, the support from the community—it was everything we hoped for.”
