A pair of unanswered goals in the third period lifted the Cochrane Generals to a 5-4 win over the Cubs at the Kinplex Arena in Medicine Hat last night.
Evan Sine made his first of the season a big one, scoring the game-winner on a power-play with three-and-a-half minutes remaining.
Rockie Lincoln Pidsadowski notched a pair to put the Gens ahead in the first. Scoring his third of the season just 2:12 into the second, Diogo Coelho extended the lead to 3-1 before the Cubs surged back with three unanswered goals to grab the lead by the end of the frame.
Penalty trouble in the third cost the Cubs. Kael Kozicki scored his first as a General on the power play to tie the game midway through the period before Sine buried the winner.
With the win, the Gens improved to 2-1 heading into a special home opener tonight at the SLS Centre.
The team has dedicated the game to the memory of Elliot VanWynsberghe, a 10-year-old superfan who lost his battle with cancer last year.
Elliot VanWynsbergheA tailgate party begins at 5 p.m. by the curling centre entrance, with puppies from the Cochrane and Area Humane Society (CAHS) on hand. Donations to CAHS will be accepted in Elliot’s name. The Humane Society was one of his favourite places to visit.
A special opening ceremony is set for 7 p.m. Proceeds from the team’s share of the 50-50 draw, along with sales of specially designed stickers and toques, will also go to the Humane Society.
