For Evan Sine, entering his fourth junior hockey season with the Cochrane Generals isn’t just about a promotion—it’s about legacy.

The Calgary native is stepping into the captaincy after spending his entire junior career with the club, transforming an adopted hometown team into a true second family.

“It means a lot,” Sine said of wearing the ‘C’. “I’ve been here for three years now, and this is my fourth year. Cochrane is probably one of the best communities I’ve ever been in.”

That bond extends far beyond the rink. From the annual Walmart Christmas toy run to the local Christmas parade, Sine and his teammates have deeply integrated themselves into the community. Those grassroots connections have helped build a tight-knit culture inside the locker room—one that Sine now shares with alternate captains Nolan Smith, Brandon Palinkas, and Alexander Devnich.

Palinkas and Devnich are both Gens veterans, while Smith brings a wealth of experience from his long junior career, most recently with the Okotoks Bisons.

“I’m really proud and excited to wear the C. It’s a big role,” Sine said, noting his confidence in the supporting leadership group.

Finding an Identity on the Ice

That chemistry is already being tested. The Generals opened their campaign with a demanding road trip, dropping an opener in Sylvan Lake before responding with a crucial bounce-back win in Coaldale.

“It was a big game for us,” Sine said. “Everyone’s bonded really well on the ice. We’re still trying to figure out the flow, but we have high hopes.”

Those hopes face an immediate measuring stick this weekend as the Generals host the Airdrie Thunder tonight in their season home opener before welcoming the defending HJHL champion Medicine Hat Cubs on Saturday.

Fired up for home opene

Friday’s matchup offers a fresh look at a familiar pre-season foe, but the real fireworks are expected Saturday. Medicine Hat eliminated Cochrane in last year’s South Division final before capturing the franchise’s first league title. For Sine and the Generals, it’s the ultimate early-season litmus test.

“Medicine Hat will definitely be a test for us,” Sine said. “It’s a different game when it actually counts, and I’m excited for it.”

The 6’2″, 170 lb. player is coming off a career year with the Generals, racking up 50 points in 34 regular-season games and another eight in the playoffs. Prior to junior, the forward played his final two minor hockey seasons with the Calgary Northwest U18 AA Bruins.
