Cochrane junior hockey teams ruled the weekend, delivering big wins for both the Generals and the Chaos.
The Generals hit the road Friday and steamrolled the Ponoka Stampeders 11-1, peppering the net with 61 shots. Brendan Thubron led the charge with a goal and four assists, while Domenic Gelinas set up four others. Tristan Ekdahl, Alex Devnich, and Diago Coelho each scored twice, with singles from Cole Whelan, Ty Barry, Emmet Long, and Lincoln Pidsadowski. Karter Simpson scored Ponoka’s lone goal late in the first period.
Back at home, the Generals pulled away from the Airdrie Thunder, breaking a 3-3 tie midway through the third to win 6-3. Evan Malcom’s second of the night gave Cochrane the lead, Evan Judge added an insurance goal on the power play, and Brayden Palinkas capped it with a short-handed goal in the closing minutes. Evan Sine and Lincoln Pidsadowski also scored, helping the Generals avenge an earlier road loss to Airdrie.
Cochrane hosts the High River Flyers Saturday at 4:15 p.m. and the Red Deer Vipers Sunday at 3 p.m., looking to keep the momentum rolling.
Alyssa McCasey chases a flying puck in the Eagles end, where most of yesterday’s game was played. In AJFHL action, Breane Byck was a brick wall, turning away 36 shots for her first shutout of the season as the Chaos blanked the Edmonton Wolves 2-0 on Nov. 22. Sabrina Allen opened the scoring after a scoreless first, and Erika Wense added a power-play goal in the third to seal it.
Sunday at home, the Chaos unleashed 55 shots on Lethbridge Eagles goalie Hayley Whelen in a 7-2 rout. Kaylee Stagman and Zoe Walker scored twice each, with singles from Sarah Gaiser, Addison Reich, and Quinlan Laverdiere.
The Chaos face the Edmonton Wolves in a rematch Nov. 29 at 1:30 p.m., followed by the Calgary Titans Sunday at 5:30 p.m. Cochrane remains atop the South Division of the Alberta Junior Female Hockey League.
