The Generals found the recipe for success Saturday night in Red Deer as they continued their strong play skating to a decisive 8-0 win. The main ingredients in the victory included strong playmaking ability, accurate passing and timely goaltending. It seemed to be a fun game for the team as they had a big game on the offensive end while at the same time playing shutdown defense, something the coaching staff has been emphasizing.
The Generals had some jump to start the game and quickly found the lead just 1:37 in when Jesse Adshead jumped on a juicy rebound and wristed it top shelf. Then just 15 seconds later and on the same shift Wes Kashuba found another rebound and backhanded it home to put the Vipers on their heels. Grinder Kyle Tucker assisted on both goals and Kolton Brown assisted on Kashuba’s marker. The team continued to push forward and both team sniper Dave Sissons and rookie Joel Grant bulged the twine to put the Generals up 4-0 going into intermission #1. Kurt Briggs and Andrew Twoyoungmen assisted on Sissons’ while Grant’s was unassisted.
The ice remained tilted towards Red Deer’s end in the second frame as Cochrane added three more to the scoreboard to put the game into the ‘blowout’ column. Tanner Boothby kept his goal scoring momentum going by notching one at the 4:28 mark with assists from Twoyoungmen and Sissons. Veteran blueliner Mike Cann wanted some of the pie so the next goal came from him when he collected his own rebound in his skates and smoothly kicked the puck to his stick and slid it into a gaping net. Assisting on that power play goal was newcomer Danny Mcsween and Sissons. Then it was Mcsween’s turn to shine as he took a needle threading pass from Adshead, short handed, and with a defender on his back powered his way to the net to undress the Vipers tender and slide it home for his first goal as a Cochrane General.
The third frame was a bit choppy as both teams found the penalty box more often and the flow of the game disappeared. The Generals found the scoreboard once more with a tap in goal from Tanner Boothby on the power play late in the third on a slick goal line feed from Sissons. Cann got the second assist as Cochrane cruised the rest of the way, getting a comfortable win. Not to be forgotten, goaltender Dylan Sutton had a very solid night stopping all 24 shots sent his way. His rebound control was very good and he made some timely saves to preserve the shutout, his second of the season.
